just a heads up to my fellow dissertation writers using word 2003. (yes, that’s right, i’m too cheap to buy the new shit when the old shit i bought back in college still works.)

chances are you are required to NOT number some pages, and then number some in one format, and then number some others in a different format.

this can be done by:

1. creating section breaks between the parts with different numbering requirements

2. inserting page numbers in preferred format for first numbered section

3. deselecting the ‘link to previous section’ in your footer for the next section (found in header and footer toolbar)

4. inserting page numbers in preferred format for the next section

5. etc.

this took me ENTIRELY too long to figure out, and is a major reason that i have put off assembly of the various pieces of the beast. so i thought i would share in hopes that it saves someone else a chunk of time.
